We engineer biomolecular materials with unusual physical or chemical properties (e.g., paramagnetism, water diffusion, and photoreception) to repurpose them into genetic reporters for studying cell function in challenging albeit physiologically relevant environments, specifically, O2-independent (anaerobic) conditions and inside living animals.
